HEY WHAT’S UP HELLO: 2026 IS THE NEW 2016

The clean era is slowly dwindling away.

After years of beige minimalism, quiet luxury, slick buns, capsule wardrobes, and looking "effortlessly expensive" with effort, people are starting to crave personality again. The obsession with looking polished at all times feels exhausting now. Everything became so curated, so optimized, so neutral that somewhere along the way, individuality started disappearing.

And honestly, I think that is why 2026 is starting to feel a lot like 2016.

As someone who spent their first year of college in 2016 and actually saw Fetty Wap perform in person, that era represented being outwardly bold and creative in a way that feels almost rebellious now. It was wearing overly patterned boho leggings and hanging colorful tapestries all over dorm room walls. Bright NYX matte liquid lipstick with dark liner. Smokey eyes from the Naked palette. Flash photography. Chokers. Burgundy red lips. Distressed jeans. Messy bedroom selfies. Tumblr quotes reposted a hundred times.

And of course, the King Kylie era.

Looking back, we were all technically following the same trends, but somehow it still felt personal. Everyone interpreted the aesthetic differently. There was room for experimentation. Nobody cared about looking understated or pretending they just woke up naturally perfect. The goal was expression.

2016 was loud. It was overdone. Sometimes chaotic. Sometimes cringe. But it felt human.

People today are tired of trying to fit into this hyper polished clean girl image where everything has to look muted, effortless, and expensive. We spent years trying to make our lives look aesthetically correct for social media instead of actually expressing ourselves. Now people want color again. Personality again. Messiness again.

You can already see it happening. Bold makeup is slowly coming back. Flash photography is everywhere again. Tumblr inspired aesthetics are creeping back into fashion and beauty. People are moving away from looking perfectly curated and leaning back into looking interesting.

Even branding reflects it. Brands are becoming softer, more playful, more emotional. The era of sterile minimalism is fading because consumers want to feel something again.

And maybe that is what people actually miss about 2016.

Not necessarily the trends themselves, but the freedom that came with them. The internet still felt experimental back then. People were less afraid to be embarrassing. Less afraid to stand out. Less afraid to try things. You could edit Instagram photos with 20% exposure, 5% gradient, 12% contrast plus a filter and not feel embarrassed about it. It was all aesthetics and what felt right in the moment.

Life is short. Nobody wants to spend it looking visually approved by an algorithm.

Maybe 2026 is not becoming 2016 again.

Maybe people are just tired of hiding their personalities.
